Summer Study: Technology, AI, and the Science of Learning with Jared Cooney Horvath, PhD, MEd

Wednesday, August 12, 2026 at 1:00 PM (CDT) to Monday, August 17, 2026 at 2:30 PM (CDT)

A Moment to Meet

In late January, testimony from Jared Cooney Horvath before a United States Senate committee flooded the social media feeds of parents across the country.1 Drawn from his recent book, The Digital Delusion, the testimony centered on a jarring claim: that, for the first time in more than 200 years of cognitive research, this generation of students is less cognitively sharp than the generation before them.2

In this widely shared clip, Horvath cited NAEP performance data aligned with state-level digital adoption to explain this trend:

When technology enters learning environments, outcomes decline.3

The testimony became a flashpoint in a broader cultural moment, fueling skepticism about current classroom practices and the role of technology in learning. These conversations quickly moved beyond social media into parent-teacher exchanges, school leaders’ inboxes, and school board meetings.

Here in Tennessee, that conversation translated into policy by spring. On April 9, state lawmakers passed legislation limiting student use of digital devices during the school day in public and charter schools, except for specific instructional purposes.4 What began as a viral moment is now shaping the context in which we teach.

This summer, TAIS invites classroom teachers and academic leaders to engage this moment with intention, examining Horvath’s claims through the lens of the science of learning and growing more equipped to address parents' increasingly difficult questions about the role of tech in their child's education. Through a summer book club and virtual learning from Horvath himself, we will work to enter the new school year with practices and policies that are not anti-tech but rather pro-learning—and in alignment with the unique mission and vision of your school.
Gain clarity for your entire team from Dr. Horvath himself.

Join us in July and August as we use the reflective space of summer to make sense of this moment and gain clarity for the year ahead.

  • Engage in a virtual book study of The Digital Delusion
  • Participate in a live learning session with Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath on technology, AI, and the science of learning
  • Join a panel of TAIS school leaders to explore implications for classroom practice and school policy

Learning Session and Panel with Dr. Horvath

August 12, 1:00-2:30 pm Central via Zoom

Jared Cooney Horvath (PhD, MEd) is a neuroscientist, educator, best-selling author, and expert in the field of human learning. He currently serves as the director of LME Global. He joins us virtually on August 12 to lead a live learning session on technology, AI, and the science of learning. During this session, we will drive into the question of ‘why’ – why is digital technology so often detrimental to learning and what are the mechanisms driving negative effects?  With a deeper understanding of ‘why’ these tools so often disappoint, we will be must better poised to meaningfully considered when and how (if ever) we choose to employ tech and AI to supplement the learning process.

Specific Topics Explored:

  • How do digital technologies impact student learning and experience?
  • What is the problem with multitasking, and how does tech address this?
  • What is the difference between in-person and digital education?
  • What is the underlying story of AI, and why is this tool a net-loss for ed?
  • How does technology impact brain development and stress response?

After Dr. Horvath's 60-minute session, a panel of TAIS school leaders will join him in a 30-minute conversation about the implications of his research for classroom practice, parent education, and school policy. Audience members will be able to submit questions for the panel.

There are two avenues for participation in this summer study:

(1) An individual pass includes the The Digital Delusion book club and single-attendee access to the August 12th virtual learning session and panel discussion with Jared Cooney Horvath.

(2) The Full Faculty Pass affords three seats in The Digital Delusion book club and access for your entire faculty to the August 12th virtual learning session and panel discussion with Jared Cooney Horvath. We hope this second avenue can complement schools' August in-service programming and launch deeper, school-based conversations among faculty, leaders, and families.

With both avenues, book club participants will provide their own copy of Horvath's, The Digital Delusion.

Faculty teams and individuals must register by July 1, 2026.
