Wessebago
Consultancy and TAIS Present
A Planned Giving
Workshop
Doug Gortner
Managing Partner, Wessebago
Consultancy
Description:
Due to
the low interest rate environment and the enormous appreciation in the value of
stocks and real estate over the last 25 years (the Dow Jones was at $776 when
our Managing Partner, Doug Gortner, founded Deerfield Academy’s planned giving
program in 1983; today it is over
$10,000) it is “the best of times” for planned giving. For example, a mailing Wessebago Consultancy
prepared last summer for “the Monroe Harding of Vermont” demonstrated that the
after-tax, cash-in-pocket return of a 6.6% Gift Annuity is more than five times
that of a national-average 2.0% one-year Certificate of Deposit. In his workshop Doug will be discussing this
and other financial tools that are capable of providing schools with stable
income in our current economic environment.
Doug Gortner:
After
graduating from Brown University, Doug Gortner embarked on a career as an
international underwriter and banker. In
1983 he was lured back to his old boarding school, Deerfield Academy, to launch
a planned giving program. Since that
time he has served as chief development officer at a university, an art museum,
and three independent schools, and has served as a fundraising consultant for
more than 40 nonprofit organizations, including 14 independent schools. He recently authored for CASE Deferred Giving . . . Give Now, Pay Later,
a short book on planned giving, contributed articles to Planned Giving Today (the peer-to-peer journal of the profession)
and has spoken regularly on planned giving for over 25 years to CASE/NAIS
conferences. In addition to planned
giving, Mr. Gortner’s specialties include stewardship programs, annual fund
turn-around, and major gifts.
